How to Set Up the Perfect Backyard BBQ Space: 10 Essentials That Instantly Upgrade Your Setup (Without Overthinking It)

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Most people don’t realize this until they try it:

Setting up a great backyard BBQ space isn’t about having a grill.

It’s about everything around the grill.

You can have the best food in the world, but if your setup is uncomfortable, disorganized, or missing a few key things, the whole experience feels off.

The good news? You don’t need a full outdoor renovation. You just need a few smart upgrades that solve the most common BBQ problems.

1. A Reliable Grill That Actually Holds Heat

The biggest mistake people make is using a grill that heats unevenly or dies out mid-cook. That’s when burgers get burned on one side and raw on the other.

A solid propane or charcoal grill with good heat control makes everything easier—less babysitting, better results.

πŸ‘‰ If you’re upgrading, you can check out well-rated BBQ grills here

2. A Proper BBQ Tool Set (So You’re Not Running Inside Every 2 Minutes)

If you’ve ever used kitchen tongs outside and then had to bring them back inside… you already know the problem.

A dedicated BBQ tool set solves that instantly. It keeps everything you need—tongs, spatula, fork—right where you’re cooking.

πŸ‘‰ Browse durable grill tool sets here

3. Outdoor Seating That Doesn’t Make Guests Leave Early

Nothing kills a BBQ vibe faster than uncomfortable seating.

Plastic chairs that sink into grass or wobble on uneven ground make people leave sooner than they want to.

A simple outdoor patio set or cushioned seating instantly fixes this.

πŸ‘‰ See comfortable Budget Friendly outdoor seating options here

πŸ‘‰ See comfortable Luxury outdoor seating options here

4. A Cooler That Actually Keeps Drinks Cold

Warm drinks ruin backyard BBQs more than people admit.

A high-quality cooler keeps everything cold for hours—even on hot days—so you’re not constantly running back inside.

πŸ‘‰ Find a reliable cooler here

5. Outdoor Lighting (This Changes Everything)

Most BBQ setups fall apart once the sun goes down.

Good lighting—string lights, lanterns, or LED patio lights—keeps the space usable and makes it feel way more inviting.

πŸ‘‰ You can browse outdoor lighting ideas here

6. A Prep Table or Outdoor Cart

This is one of the most overlooked upgrades.

Without a prep surface, you end up juggling plates, utensils, and raw food with no real space to work.

A simple rolling cart or outdoor prep table fixes that immediately.

πŸ‘‰ Check out outdoor prep stations here

7. A Simple Speaker for Background Music

BBQs feel a little awkward in silence.

A portable Bluetooth speaker adds just enough atmosphere without overcomplicating things.

πŸ‘‰ Browse portable outdoor speakers here

8. A Heat-Resistant Grill Mat (Small Detail, Big Difference)

Grease stains on patios or decks are a pain to clean—and expensive to fix.

A grill mat protects the surface and makes cleanup way easier.

πŸ‘‰ Find grill mats here

9. Weather Protection (So Plans Don’t Get Ruined)

Nothing kills BBQ plans faster than sudden weather changes.

A simple patio umbrella or pop-up canopy keeps things going even if the sun gets too strong or light rain shows up.

πŸ‘‰ See outdoor shade options here

10. Storage for Tools and Supplies

If your grill tools are scattered everywhere, setup becomes stressful fast.

A small storage bin or outdoor cabinet keeps everything in one place so you’re not searching for tongs mid-cook.

πŸ‘‰ Browse outdoor storage solutions here

The Real Secret to a Good Backyard BBQ

It’s not about having everything.

It’s about removing friction.

The easier your setup is to use, the more enjoyable the entire experience becomes—for you and everyone else.

A few small upgrades can turn a “we grill sometimes” backyard into a space people actually want to stay in.

Final Thoughts

A great BBQ setup isn’t complicated—it’s just intentional.

Fix the small frustrations (heat, seating, storage, lighting), and everything else starts to feel effortless.

How to Create Stunning Mirror Signs with Stencils for Weddings & Events

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Mirror signage has become a staple in modern wedding and event dΓ©cor—and for good reason. It’s elegant, versatile, and instantly elevates any space. Whether you’re planning a wedding, bridal shower, or engagement party, stenciling on mirrors is a simple way to create custom signage that looks professionally done.

Why Choose Mirror Signs?

Mirrors add a unique touch that paper or acrylic just can’t replicate. They reflect light beautifully, making them perfect for both indoor and outdoor settings. From welcome signs to seating charts, they blend seamlessly into almost any theme—romantic, vintage, minimalist, or glam.

Plus, they’re reusable. You can thrift a mirror, transform it, and even repurpose it after the event.

What You’ll Need

To get started, gather these essentials:

Tip: If you want everything in one place, beginner stencil kits on Amazon or craft stores.

Step-by-Step: Stenciling on a Mirror

1. Clean the Surface Thoroughly

Any dust or fingerprints will affect how the paint adheres. Use a streak-free glass cleaner and let it dry completely.

2. Position Your Stencil

Carefully place your stencil on the mirror. Use painter’s tape to secure it and ensure it’s level—this makes a huge difference in the final look.

3. Apply Paint Lightly

Dip your brush lightly into the paint and dab off excess. Use a gentle tapping motion rather than brushing to prevent paint from bleeding under the stencil.

4. Build in Layers

It’s better to apply multiple thin coats than one thick coat. Let each layer dry slightly before adding another.

5. Remove the Stencil Carefully

Peel it off slowly while the paint is still slightly wet to avoid cracking or peeling.

6. Let It Cure

Allow the design to dry fully before moving or displaying the mirror.

Design Ideas for Events

Welcome Signs: “Welcome to Our Wedding” with names and date

Seating Charts: Organized lists or grouped tables

Bar Menus: Signature drinks with fun names

Quotes or Hashtags: Perfect for photo backdrops

Directional Signs: “Ceremony This Way” or “Find Your Seat”

If you’re not confident designing layouts, pre-made stencil templates or editable Canva designs can save a lot of time.

Tips for a Professional Finish

Choose a font that’s readable from a distance—script is beautiful, but balance it with simplicity.

Practice on glass or a spare mirror first if you’re new to stenciling.

Use high-quality adhesive stencils for cleaner edges.

Stick to classic colors like white, gold, or black for timeless appeal.

Where to Find Mirrors

You don’t need to spend a fortune. Check:

  • Thrift stores
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Rental companies
  • Your own home (yes, really!)

If you’re short on time, online retailers often carry ready-to-use mirrors in different sizes with fast shipping.

Or mix and match different shapes and sizes for a more eclectic, styled look.

Final Thoughts

Stenciling on mirrors is one of those DIY projects that delivers maximum impact with relatively minimal effort. With the right tools and a bit of patience, you can create signage that looks like it came straight from a professional event designer.

Whether you’re crafting for your own celebration or starting a small dΓ©cor business, mirror signs are a beautiful way to add a personal touch that guests will remember.

20 Spooktacular Halloween Party Dishes I’ve Made Over the Years

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Over the years, Halloween has become my excuse to go all out in the kitchen. I’m not just talking about a pumpkin or two on the porch—I mean a full spread of spooky, playful, slightly over-the-top party food that people actually get excited to eat. Every year I try something new, but there are a handful of staples that keep making a comeback because they’re just too fun (and too good) to skip.

Here are some of my favorite Halloween party dishes that I’ve made over the years:

1. “Scream” Charcuterie Board

This one is always a conversation starter. I arrange Fruit, cheeses, olives, nuts, Chocolate covered Prezels and crackers around a “Scream”-inspired centerpiece. Use a large wooden charcuterie board or large platter to get that clean, aesthetic look, I also use small serving bowls for dips and olives. It’s equal parts creepy and classy, and it disappears fast.

2. Bone Breadsticks

Simple but effective—Pizza Dough Shaped as Bones and brushed with Butter and Herbs. I like using a silicone baking mat so they don’t stick and bake evenly.

3. Tiramisu Graveyard

One of my personal favorites. I turn a classic tiramisu into a full graveyard scene with crushed cookies for “dirt” and cookie tombstones. It’s dramatic and delicious. A rectangular glass baking dish works perfectly for layering and presentation or disposable aluminum tins if transporting and bringing to a party.

4. Chocolate Covered Pretzels

These are my go-to filler treat. I drizzle them with orange, purple, and black chocolate to keep things festive using melting wafers and a drizzle bottle or piping bags for clean lines.

5. Chocolate Covered Apple Wedges

A slightly fresher option that still feels indulgent. I slice apples and dip them in chocolate, then decorate with Halloween sprinkles.

6. Brownie Graves

Thick, fudgy brownies topped with cookie tombstones and a little crumble for dirt. Always a hit with the chocolate lovers. A nonstick brownie pan makes cutting clean squares way easier.

7. Spiderweb Pizza

I use cheese or sauce to create a web design on top—super simple, but it looks impressive when it comes out of the oven. A pizza stone or baking steel really helps get that crispy base.

8. Eyeball Pizza

Mini mozzarella “eyes” with olive pupils scattered across the pizza. It’s a little creepy in the best way. I usually use pre-sliced olives to save time.

9. Eyeball Rice Balls

These are Easy to Decorate—Make the rice balls and use plastic Eyeball decorations Placed sporadically around the platter to get the look of staring eyes. This platter is too cute!

10. Mummy Hot Dogs

A classic I keep bringing back. Wrapped in strips of dough with little “eyes” peeking out—it’s impossible to go wrong with these. I use crescent roll dough sheets to make wrapping easier.

11. Halloween Cupcakes

I go all out with frosting—Find Candy Sprinkles of Frankenstein, ghosts, pumpkins, spiders, you name it. They’re my creative outlet every year.

12. Halloween Brownie Bites

Bite-sized brownies decorated with themed toppings. Easy to grab and perfect for parties. A mini muffin pan is perfect for getting uniform portions.

13. Mini Pizza Bagel Spiders

These are as fun as they sound—bagel pizzas turned into little spiders using olives. I use a baking sheet with rack so they crisp up nicely.

14. Meatball Mummies

Meatballs wrapped in dough or cheese strips to look like tiny mummies. Savory, warm, and always gone in minutes. A cookie scoop helps keep meatballs evenly sized.

15. Squid Ink Spaghetti with Mushroom Skulls

This one’s a bit dramatic, but I love it. The black pasta sets the tone, and I carve mushrooms into little skull shapes for the top using a small paring knife.

16. Halloween Sugar Cookies

A decorating marathon every time, but totally worth it. Pumpkins, bats, ghosts—I’ve made them all. I use Halloween cookie cutters and if you have the patience royal icing. I used a simple glaze with food coloring and a food coloring pen.

17. Halloween Rainbow Cookies

My spooky twist on a classic—layered and dyed in Halloween colors instead of the traditional ones. Gel food coloring sets give the best vibrant shades.

18. Halloween Sheet Cake

This is usually my centerpiece dessert. Big, bold, and decorated to match whatever theme I’m going for that year. A large sheet cake pan and offset spatula make decorating much easier.

19. Spiderweb Eggplant Parmesan

A savory dish with a Halloween spin—cheese melted into a web pattern over crispy eggplant layers. A mandoline slicer helps get perfectly even slices.

20. Halloween Candy Platter

This is my easiest crowd-pleaser. I pile together all kinds of Halloween candies—chocolates, gummies, caramels—and arrange them by color or type so it looks just as festive as everything else on the table. A tiered serving tray makes it look just as festive as everything else on the table, or you can use a large platter.

Every year, putting this menu together is honestly one of my favorite parts of Halloween. It’s not just about the food—it’s about the reactions, the laughs, and seeing people enjoy something a little unexpected. And somehow, there’s always room to add one more spooky idea to the list.

Graduation season sneaks up fast—and suddenly you’re asking the same question as everyone else:

What do I actually get them?

Money works, sure. But if you want something a little more personal (without overthinking it), the best gifts fall into one of three categories:

  • Meaningful enough to remember
  • Or something they wouldn’t buy themselves

Here are 12 ideas that hit that balance perfectly.

12. Cash—But With a Personal Note πŸ’Œ

Still one of the most appreciated gifts. The difference is in the message—write something they’ll actually keep.

How to Make Any Gift Feel More Thoughtful

Even a simple gift can feel meaningful if you:

  • Add a handwritten note
  • Tie it to their next step (college, job, travel)
  • Combine something practical with something personal

That’s what people remember—not just the item itself.

Final Thoughts

Graduation is one of those rare moments that’s both an ending and a beginning.

The best gifts don’t have to be perfect—they just have to show that you see where they’re going next.

How We Avoided Ear Tubes for Our Child: Our Experience with the EarPopper

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Note: This is the version we purchased several years ago. The current model available online may look slightly different.

As a mom, there’s nothing more frustrating than watching your child struggle with fluid in the ear and feeling like you’re running out of options.

A few years ago, one of my kids had persistent fluid in their ear that just wouldn’t drain. We tried everything—multiple medications over the course of three months—and nothing worked.

Eventually, we were referred to an ENT specialist, who recommended ear tubes as the next step.

That didn’t sit right with me. Surgery felt like a big decision for a child, so I decided to get a second opinion—and I’m really glad I did.

The second doctor, a pediatric ENT, suggested we try a device called the EarPopper by Summit Medical Home Version before considering surgery.

I had never heard of it before, but the idea immediately caught my attention. It’s a non-surgical, drug-free way to help open the Eustachian tubes and allow fluid to drain naturally.

What Is the EarPopper?

The EarPopper is a handheld device that delivers a gentle stream of air through the nose while swallowing. This helps open the Eustachian tube—the pathway that allows fluid to drain from the middle ear. It’s not designed to be a one-and-done solution—consistent use is key to getting results.

It’s quick, simple, and can be done at home.

πŸ‘‰ Check current price and availability here

Our Experience Using It

I ordered ours online (you can see it here; yes, the price gave me pause too), but compared to surgery, it felt worth trying. In our case, the issue was that fluid just wasn’t draining properly.

One thing I learned quickly is that this isn’t a one-time fix—it works best with consistent use over time. Our doctor recommended sticking with it twice a day to help encourage proper drainage.

We used it exactly as directed:

  • Twice a day
  • For about 7–8 weeks

The process was surprisingly easy:

  • Place the device against one nostril
  • Close the other nostril with your finger
  • Take a sip of water
  • Press the button while swallowing

My child said they could feel and hear a slight “pop” or crackling sensation during use—which is exactly what you want.

The Results

After about two months of consistent use, we went back for a follow-up appointment.

The result?
The fluid was completely gone.

No surgery. No tubes.

Even the doctor was impressed.

πŸ‘‰ See the device we used

Is It Worth It?

I won’t pretend it’s cheap—but when you compare it to:

  • Surgery
  • Recovery time
  • Medical costs

…it felt like a worthwhile investment for us.

Of course, every situation is different, and some children do still need tubes. But if you’re looking for a non-invasive option to discuss with your doctor, this might be worth considering. It does require consistency and a bit of patience, but for us, it was absolutely worth it.

Final Thoughts

This worked incredibly well for us, but always check with your pediatrician or ENT specialist before starting anything new.

If there’s a chance to avoid surgery, even a small one, it’s something I personally wanted to explore—and I’m glad we did.

No-Bake Chocolate Mousse Cake: A Simple, Elegant Dessert

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

There’s something about Easter desserts that makes them feel a little more special. After a big Easter meal this year, I ordered a slice of no-bake chocolate mousse cake at a restaurant—and it completely stole the show.

It was everything you want in a dessert: rich but not too heavy, with a silky, airy mousse layer over a slightly firm chocolate crust. Each bite was smooth, deeply chocolatey, and just sweet enough to keep you coming back for more. I knew right away I had to recreate it at home.

The best part? This dessert is surprisingly simple. No oven, no complicated steps—just good chocolate, whipped cream, and a little chill time. It’s perfect for holidays, dinner parties, or anytime you want something indulgent without the fuss.

Here’s the easy no-bake version I’ve been loving:

🍫 No-Bake Chocolate Mousse Cake

Ingredients:

Crust

  • 200g chocolate cookies (like Oreos)
  • 5 tbsp (70g) melted butter

Filling

Optional Toppings

  • Cocoa powder
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Whipped cream

🧁 Kitchen Tools I Use

To make this recipe easier, I use:

Instructions:

1. Make the crust

Crush the cookies into fine crumbs and mix with melted butter. Press firmly into the bottom of an 8-inch springform pan (I use one like this—since it makes it easier to remove the mousse later). Chill for 20–30 minutes.

2. Melt the chocolate

Melt the chocolate gently and let it cool slightly (it should be warm, not hot).

3. Make the mousse

Whip the cream with sugar, vanilla, and salt until soft peaks form. Stir a small amount into the chocolate to lighten it, then gently fold in the rest.

4. Assemble

Pour the mousse over the crust and smooth the top. Refrigerate for 4–6 hours, or overnight.

5. Serve

Top with cocoa powder, chocolate shavings, or whipped cream before serving.

This cake is proof that simple desserts can still feel elegant and special. If you’re looking for something easy yet impressive, this one is definitely worth making.

Dark Chocolate Espresso Layer Cake with Coconut Buttercream

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

There’s something about espresso and chocolate together that just feels a little more intentional than a regular dessert. Like it belongs to slow afternoons, or late nights when you’re not really tired but you want something warm and grounding anyway.

I first made this cake after I had leftover coffee sitting on the counter and a bar of dark chocolate I’d been saving “for something special.” It turned into one of those recipes that feels a little dramatic in the best way—deep chocolate flavor, soft layers, and just enough espresso to make it interesting without overpowering everything else.

It’s the kind of cake that tastes even better the next day, which is dangerous knowledge to have.

Ingredients

Cake:

  • 5 oz dark chocolate (I used a good quality 70% dark chocolate here—it melts better and gives the cake a deeper flavor without making it too bitter)
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup brewed coffee, cooled (espresso or strong coffee both work)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 large eggs

Coconut Buttercream:

  • 1/3 cup cream of coconut (not coconut milk—this is sweeter and thicker)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups confectioners sugar

Cake Directions

1. Prep Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line three 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper (this makes a huge difference when removing the layers cleanly).

2. Melt the chocolate Melt the dark chocolate either in the microwave in short bursts or using a double boiler on the stove. Set aside to cool slightly.

3. Mix dry ingredients In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda. Set aside.

4. Mix wet ingredients In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, cooled coffee, and vanilla extract.

5. Cream butter & sugar Using a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy.

6. Add eggs Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

7. Combine everything Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Once combined, gently fold in the melted chocolate.

8. Bake Divide the batter evenly between the three pans. Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

9. Cool Let cakes cool in the pans for 20 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Coconut Buttercream Directions

Using a mixer with a whisk attachment, beat together the cream of coconut and heavy cream on medium speed.

Add the butter a little at a time, beating until the frosting becomes thick and creamy.

Turn the mixer to low and gradually add confectioners sugar until you reach a smooth, spreadable consistency.

Assembly

Place one cake layer on a plate, cake stand or cake turntable. Spread a layer of frosting on top.

Add the second layer, frost again, then place the final layer on top and frost the entire cake.

(An offset spatula makes this part so much easier if you have one.)

Notes

The coffee enhances the chocolate flavor more than making the cake taste like coffee.

Make sure your cake layers are completely cool before frosting.

This cake keeps really well and honestly tastes even better the next day.

I’ve linked the tools and ingredients I use and/or suggest throughout the post in case you want to use the same ones.
