There’s something about homemade oatmeal cookies that makes a house feel warm and cozy the second they go into the oven. In our house, these cookies are a regular request from my kids — especially on chilly afternoons or weekends when everyone is hanging around the kitchen waiting for that first warm batch to come out.
The smell alone is enough to bring everyone into the kitchen. The buttery cinnamon aroma fills the whole house, and before the cookies have even cooled, little hands are already reaching for “just one more.” Honestly, these cookies disappear so quickly I’ve learned to hide a few for myself if I want any the next day.
They’re soft in the middle, slightly chewy around the edges, and perfect with raisins or chocolate chips depending on what mood we’re in. Best of all, the recipe is simple enough to whip up anytime.
Homemade Oatmeal Cookie Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 sticks butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups oatmeal
- Optional: 1 cup raisins or chocolate chips
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- Cream the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs and vanilla and mix well.
- Stir in the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the oatmeal and mix until combined.
- Fold in raisins or chocolate chips if using.
- Spoon dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet or use parchment paper for easier cleanup and release.
- Bake for about 10–12 minutes, until the cookies are golden brown around the edges.
Makes about 48 cookies.
You can halve the recipe for about 24 cookies instead… but honestly, who wants fewer cookies?
👉 Parchment paper is one of my favorite baking shortcuts because the cookies slide right off and cleanup takes seconds. (Affiliate Link)
Tips for the Best Oatmeal Cookies
- Don’t overbake them. They continue cooking a little after coming out of the oven.
- For softer cookies, store them in an airtight container with a slice of bread.
- Chocolate chips make them feel extra indulgent, but raisins give them that classic cozy oatmeal cookie flavor.
- Cinnamon is the secret ingredient that makes the whole house smell incredible.
👉 Using a cookie scoop keeps every cookie the same size so they bake evenly and look bakery-perfect.
Why We Love This Recipe
These cookies have become one of those little family traditions that everyone looks forward to. My kids know exactly when they’re almost done baking because the sweet cinnamon smell drifts through every room in the house. By the time the tray hits the counter, everyone is circling the kitchen waiting for the first bite.
And somehow, no matter how many I make, they vanish almost immediately. That’s usually the best sign a recipe is worth keeping around.
